Apple has warned that its first foldable phone, the iPhone Duo, will be in limited supply at its stores when it goes on sale on Friday, October 23, 2026. In a statement on Wednesday, the company said only a small number of units will be available to walk-in customers, and in many countries including India, stores will hand over only phones that were already ordered online.
The warning follows a pre-order rush in which the $1,999 phone sold out within minutes and pushed delivery estimates for some buyers into late January.
What Apple Said
“On Friday morning, our teams look forward to welcoming customers at Apple Stores to experience iPhone Duo and the incredible iPhone line-up for themselves,” Apple said in a statement shared with outlets including Reuters, 9to5Mac and MacRumors. The company added that it is working hard to get the product into customers’ hands as quickly as possible.
Apple told MacRumors that given “extraordinary” pre-order demand, it expects walk-in supply to sell out quickly on Friday. MacRumors also reported that Apple Store employees have been advised there will likely be no walk-in stock on launch day in some locations.
Where Walk-In Sales Are Available
Walk-in availability varies by country. According to Reuters, online order pickup and limited walk-in purchases will be available in the United States, Australia, Canada, Mexico and much of the UK and Europe. 9to5Mac and MacRumors list walk-in stock in the US, Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, Mexico, Germany, the Netherlands, Singapore, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Türkiye and the UK, with most stores in Italy also included.
In other regions, only customers who already bought online will receive phones. Apple named mainland China, France, Hong Kong, India, Japan, Malaysia, South Korea, Taiwan, Thailand and the UAE. In Macau, the phone will be available to walk-in customers only, with limited inventory, Apple said.
MacRumors noted that Apple restricts walk-in sales in some countries at launch partly to manage crowds and deter scalping, though Apple has not given that reason itself.
What Indian Buyers Should Know
India is on the list where stores will only fulfil online orders. Pre-orders opened on Friday, October 16, and Apple’s India store lists the iPhone Duo from Rs 2,99,900 for the 256GB model, Rs 3,24,900 for 512GB, Rs 3,74,900 for 1TB and Rs 4,49,900 for 2TB, available from October 23.
BusinessToday reported that Apple has limited online orders to two units per customer and that its six India stores, in Delhi, Mumbai and other cities, would open earlier than usual on Friday. It cited Mint as saying only about 6,000 units are expected to reach India in the first week. That figure is an estimate attributed to Mint, and Apple has not confirmed it.
How the Shortage Developed
Apple announced the iPhone Duo at its September 9 event in Cupertino, alongside the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max. The phone has a 5.4-inch cover display and a 7.6-inch foldable inner screen, according to Yahoo Finance. Pre-orders in the US opened on October 16 and sold out in minutes, moving delivery dates from October 23 to late January.
AppleInsider reported that buyers began lining up outside Apple Stores days before launch. About 30 hours ahead of sales, only five or six people were waiting at the Fifth Avenue store in New York, according to a post it cited.
Why Supply Is Tight
Reuters noted that the iPhone Duo is a more complex product than a standard iPhone, with a tight-fitting hinge that analysts believe may take time for Apple to produce in large volumes. Apple does not disclose production numbers before launch.
Analysts also expect Apple to quickly become a major player in a niche segment where rivals such as Samsung and Huawei have sold premium folding phones for years, Reuters said.
Why It Matters
The shortage shows how strong early demand is for Apple’s first folding phone, even at a price of $1,999 in the US and above Rs 3 lakh in India. It also tests how fast Apple can scale manufacturing of a new, complex design. For buyers, it means planning ahead, because those who did not pre-order may face a long wait.
What Happens Next
Apple’s stores will open on Friday morning with limited stock where available. Delivery dates for online orders may change as supply improves, and Apple has not said when inventory will be sufficient for walk-in sales everywhere. Buyers should check Apple’s online store and local Apple Store pages for the latest availability.
