Days after Apple’s first foldable phone went on sale, some owners are posting photos of inner displays that cracked along the hinge, often with a bright white line of pixels running across the screen. The iPhone Duo reached customers on October 23, 2026, and by the weekend the complaints had spread across Reddit, the MacRumors forums and social media.
Apple has not publicly commented, according to several reports, and nobody has shown how common the problem is. A teardown published on Sunday offers possible explanations, but none has been confirmed.
What Owners Are Reporting
MacRumors reported on October 23 that some iPhone Duos were showing hinge-related display cracks, based on photos shared on Reddit and its forums. It said almost all of the faults sit right along the hinge and most appear as a line of bright pixels across one side of the screen.
The most widely shared account comes from an Australian owner, who said the inner display cracked after about six hours of ownership and fewer than 20 openings. He said he felt something under the screen near the hinge while opening the phone, then “heard an audible crack, and the screen broke right along the hinge,” as quoted by Tom’s Guide. He reported no visible marks on the screen or the outer hinge beforehand.
Apple’s Response So Far
The Australian owner said he took the phone to an Apple Store, which replaced it straight away, according to MacRumors. Reddit moderators marked his post as verified after reviewing photos and Apple documentation, which confirms the damaged handset and replacement, not the cause of the failure.
Apple has not issued a public statement on the reports, according to TBreak and Gadget Review, and it has not confirmed the Australian owner’s account. MacRumors noted that hinge failures from normal use should be covered by Apple’s one-year warranty, and that customers receiving a phone had a two-week return window. Those terms are described for the US market, so buyers elsewhere, including in India, should check Apple’s local policy.

What the iFixit Teardown Suggests
On October 25, repair site iFixit published a teardown of the iPhone Duo and commented on the failures. It said possible causes include pressure, a trapped particle, repeated bending or a manufacturing defect, and that the display may not have physically snapped, since a wiring problem can cause a similar effect.
iFixit built a 3D hinge model from teardown footage, patents and CT scans, and compared it with the damage in photos. It said the breaks cluster near the transition from the gap for the crossing flex cable to the central hinge support, slightly below where the display cable passes through the hinge, at a point where several edges meet and change how the thin display is supported as it bends. It also said curved hinge rails may lift above the flat plates as the phone closes, and that one rail lines up with the damage.
iFixit stressed there is no clear answer and said a hinge component that is meant to retract might not be doing so.
Dust and Durability Tests
iFixit also covered the iPhone Duo in fluorescent dust. It found dust in the USB-C port, speaker mesh and bezel, but few particles reached the internals. Some did enter the hinge and made it crunch, which could lead to screen damage. The hinge collected less dust than those of the Galaxy Z Fold8 and Pixel 11 Pro Fold in similar tests, and iFixit called that result encouraging while suggesting the phone is not ideal for the beach.
YouTuber JerryRigEverything ran his own dust test, in which particles entered the hinge and caused the magnets that hold the phone shut to fail, according to MacRumors.
iFixit gave the iPhone Duo a provisional repair score of 5 out of 10, higher than the 4 out of 10 it gave the Galaxy Z Fold8 and the Pixel 11 Pro Fold. It said the inner display and hinge assembly are the phone’s biggest vulnerabilities.
How Widespread Is the Problem?
No one knows. Photos on social media do not show how many phones are affected, and no sales figures or confirmed failure counts are available. Some reviewers reported folding their devices many times without damage, MacRumors said, but that does not rule out a fault in particular units.
Why It Matters
The iPhone Duo starts at $1,999 in the US and Rs 2,99,900 in India, so buyers expect durability. A hinge-area defect on a first-generation foldable would be a concern for Apple, which is already struggling to meet demand. Even so, current evidence points to a pattern worth watching, not a proven design flaw.
What Happens Next
Further verified reports and examination of damaged phones would show whether the failures share a cause, such as a specific hinge part or production batch. Apple could respond with a statement, a repair programme or a manufacturing change, but it has announced none. Owners who see cracks, bright lines, unusual resistance or hinge noise should contact Apple promptly and keep the phone free of debris around the hinge.
Frequently Asked Questions

Cracked inner screens near the hinge, often with a bright white line of pixels.
How common is it?
Unknown. There are no confirmed failure counts.
Has Apple commented?
Not publicly, according to reports reviewed.
What did iFixit find?
Possible causes include hinge rails, a trapped particle, repeated bending or a manufacturing defect, but no definite cause.
Is the iPhone Duo covered by warranty?
In the US, hinge failures from normal use should be covered by the one-year warranty, according to MacRumors. Check Apple’s policy for India.
Is the iPhone Duo dust resistant?
It has an IP68 rating, but iFixit found some dust reached the hinge.
