Mojang is testing a new underground biome in Minecraft that could change how players dig. Ice Caves, part of the fourth game drop of 2026, put ore deposits inside a frozen cave full of hazards. In test builds, nearly everything in the biome can hurt you.
Mojang has not announced a final release date. The biome is available only through experimental Java snapshots and Bedrock previews.
What Mojang Has Shown So Far
Mojang revealed Ice Caves at Minecraft LIVE on 26 September 2026, according to coverage of the event. Testing began four days later with Bedrock Preview 26.60.29, and the first Java snapshot to include the biome was 26.4 Snapshot 3 on 6 October.
Mojang’s official notes describe Ice Caves as a cave biome that generates under cold Overworld biomes. It is made mainly of Packed Ice and Calcite.
The notes list these features:
- Icicles hang from the ceiling and can grow up to five blocks long.
- Ice Crystals generate on the ground and act as the only natural light source.
- Ores are embedded in pockets of Stone and Deepslate.
- No Dirt, Granite or Glow Lichen generate in the biome.
- Strays and Frostbites spawn alongside the usual cave mobs.
Why the Ores Matter
Ore hunting has long been routine for experienced players. The ores here sit inside stone and deepslate pockets within a frozen cave, so reaching them means moving through hazards.
I could not confirm which specific ores Ice Caves contain beyond Mojang’s general wording of “ores.” Check the final patch notes before listing particular ores such as diamonds.
The Hazards Players Face
Frostbite, the Frozen Zombie
The Frostbite is a new zombie variant. According to Mojang’s notes, it switches between melee and ranged attacks depending on distance and whether it has Ice Balls. Its melee hits apply the new Freezing effect, and its thrown Ice Balls deal 4 damage.
Mojang says Frostbites drop Rotten Flesh and Ice Balls, and that they are immune to freezing. Zombies and Husks also turn into Frostbites when they stand in Powder Snow.
Freezing
The Freezing effect makes players shake, lowers their jump height and eventually deals damage. Leather armour stops the freezing visuals, as it does with Powder Snow, but doesn’t stop the effect from being applied. Ice Balls can also be used to brew Freezing potions and craft Arrows of Freezing.
Icicles
Icicles are the environmental threat. Mojang says they can drop when light levels are high enough, damaging whatever they hit. They break when exposed to nearby light sources. That means carrying torches in the cave carries a real cost, since the usual advice of lighting up a cave works against you here.
Brittle Ice
Brittle Ice arrived in Java Snapshot 4. Coverage says it generates in the biome’s crevasses and cracks when stepped on, then breaks. The Frostbite can reportedly walk across it without breaking it. In test builds, players can collect it with Silk Touch, and reports say it can also be made with Blue Ice and flowing water.
Where Ice Caves Sit Among Minecraft’s Cave Biomes
Minecraft already has the Deep Dark, Dripstone Caves and Lush Caves. Ice Caves combine ideas from several of them: a distinct look, environmental danger and a reason to explore. Mojang’s own framing points to the biome as one of 2026’s headline additions.
Later snapshots have kept adding to it. Snapshot 5 on 20 October introduced Packed Ice Bricks, an advancement for killing a Frostbite with an Ice Ball and ambient ice sounds. Snapshot 6 added Snow Bricks, according to Beebom.

Release Timing
Mojang has not confirmed a release date. Several outlets expect the drop in December 2026 based on its past schedule, with some guessing 15 December. Those are estimates. Mojang usually announces dates about two weeks ahead, according to one tracking site.
The drop is expected to ship as Java 26.4 and Bedrock 26.70. The features may change before release.
What Players Should Do Now
Players who want to try Ice Caves can use the Java snapshots or Bedrock Preview. Mojang asks testers to share feedback and report bugs through its official channels. Experimental builds can corrupt worlds, so keep test worlds separate from your main save.
